Russia’s Drones in Poland Raised NATO Concerns, Now War Games in Belarus Escalate Tensions

Date:

Tensions in Eastern Europe have escalated as Russia’s military activities in Belarus and the recent drone incident in Poland have raised NATO concerns. The joint military exercises between Russia and Belarus, dubbed “Zapad 2025,” have involved tens of thousands of troops, warships, bombers, and combat vehicles, with a focus on strategic military operations, including plans for nuclear weapons use. This extensive drill has alarmed neighboring NATO countries, especially Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania, which border Belarus.

In early September 2025, a swarm of Russian drones entered Polish airspace, causing significant concern. While Moscow denied any deliberate targeting, Polish officials labeled the incident a provocation. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte condemned the act as reckless and announced measures to bolster air defense on the alliance’s eastern flank.

The Zapad 2025 exercises, which run through mid-September, feature nuclear-capable weapons, including the new Oreshnik missile, which President Vladimir Putin claims to be capable of evading interception. These military drills have been framed as a response to what Russia perceives as increasing foreign military involvement in Ukraine. Belarus, which has hosted Russian nuclear weapons, plays a central role in Russia’s expanded defense strategy, further exacerbating the geopolitical crisis.
