Iran’s National AI Operator Nears Approval and Licensing

Date:

Iran is moving closer to formally launching its first national artificial intelligence (AI) operator, with final approval expected at the inaugural session of the country’s Regulatory Commission. Ehsan Chitsaz, Deputy Minister for ICT Policy, Development Planning, and Digital Economy, told Mehr News Agency that the operator represents a crucial step in regulating and organizing AI-related activities across the nation.

According to Chitsaz, the framework for the AI operator has been completed and is awaiting the commission’s approval, after which licensing will follow. He emphasized that this initiative reflects the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology’s (ICT) commitment to strengthening Iran’s digital economy and expanding modern infrastructure. By creating a centralized operator, the government aims to ensure transparency, oversight, and structured growth in the fast-evolving AI sector.

The establishment of a national AI operator also signals Tehran’s ambition to position itself as a competitive player in global artificial intelligence development. Officials highlight that the operator will oversee AI deployment in various industries, from healthcare and finance to public services, while ensuring compliance with ethical standards and regulatory requirements.

Once operational, the AI operator is expected to streamline AI adoption, foster innovation, and help Iran prepare its economy for digital transformation. More details on its regulatory structure and functions are expected to be announced following the commission’s decision.
