Deep in South Africa’s Northern Cape, the KHI Solar One project demonstrates Africa’s immense solar energy potential. Using hundreds of mirrored panels that track the sun and focus rays onto a central tower, the project generates 50 megawatts of electricity, enough to power over 40,000 households for 24 hours. It represents one of many initiatives aimed at diversifying Africa’s energy mix away from coal.
Africa faces a pressing energy challenge. Around 600 million people across the continent remain without electricity, limiting access to education, health care, and economic opportunities. In West Africa alone, where 220 million people lack electricity, the electrification rate is a mere 8%. Despite these needs, Africa has only 1.5% of global installed renewable power capacity, far behind regions like China, Europe, and the U.S., which account for 80% of the world’s renewable capacity.
However, Africa’s renewable energy potential is enormous. According to the United Nations, the continent holds 60% of the world’s best solar resources, with deserts and warm climates ideal for solar power. African leaders have pledged to expand renewable capacity to 300 gigawatts by 2030, equivalent to roughly 114 large power stations, with the International Renewable Energy Agency projecting that 90% of Africa’s electricity could come from renewables by 2050.
China’s role is also rising, with solar panel exports to Africa growing 60% in the past year, totaling 15,032 megawatts. While South Africa led early adoption due to power shortages, imports are now expanding across 20 African countries, highlighting growing opportunities for independent energy companies to meet the continent’s renewable energy demand.As delegates gather in Addis Ababa for the Africa Climate Summit, projects like KHI Solar One underscore the urgent need for investment in clean energy to illuminate homes, power economies, and combat climate change.
