Alisher Usmanov Steps Down as President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE)

Date:

In a significant move, Russian businessman and sports executive Alisher Usmanov has voluntarily stepped down from his role as the president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE). The decision was announced by the FIEโ€™s press office following a meeting of the FIE Executive Committee on December 1, 2024.

Details of the Decision

Usmanovโ€™s decision to suspend his duties as president was made in the interest of ensuring the efficient operations of the Federation. The FIE Executive Committee ratified his decision, with the interim role being assumed by Emmanuel Katsiadakis.

Katsiadakis, the acting FIE president from Greece, will take on all presidential functions as stipulated by the FIE Statutes until the next official Congress, where his appointment will be confirmed.

Usmanovโ€™s Leadership Journey

Alisher Usmanov, aged 71, has been a prominent figure in the global fencing world. He served as the FIE president for two decades, from 2002 to 2022, and was instrumental in guiding the international body. In addition, he played pivotal roles within the Russian Fencing Federation and the European Fencing Federation. His leadership contributions span from his presidency of the Russian Fencing Federation between 2001-2009 to his tenure as president of the European Fencing Federation (EFF) between 2005-2009.

The Election and Transition

At the FIE Election Conference held in Tashkent on November 30, 2024, Usmanov was re-elected for another term as FIE president. However, facing competition from Emmanuel Katsiadakis and former Swedish Olympian Otto Drakenberg, Usmanovโ€™s decision to step down is seen as a strategic move to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the stability of the FIE.
