Zhao Dan Makes History with China’s First Women’s Skeleton Gold

Date:

Zhao Dan, a 21-year-old from Inner Mongolia, has secured her place in history as China’s first-ever women’s skeleton gold medalist. Competing at the National Sliding Center in Yanqing, northwest Beijing, Zhao conquered the challenging “Flying Snow Dragon” track during the third leg of the 2024-25 World Cup series.

From Triple Jump to Skeleton Champion

Zhao’s journey to skeleton glory began with a pivot from athletics. Originally a triple jump athlete, Zhao’s sprinting skills made her an ideal candidate for China’s newly formed skeleton team ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Her powerful start and precise navigation through the treacherous 1.9-kilometer track helped her achieve a combined time of 2:04.27, outrunning reigning Olympic champion Hannah Neise of Germany and Britain’s Freya Tarbit.

Mastering the “Flying Snow Dragon”

The Yanqing track, notorious for its steep descents, sharp curves, and a unique 360-degree loop, has tested even the most seasoned sledders. Zhao, however, showed mastery, overcoming last year’s misstep to clinch her gold medal.

“This victory is incredibly satisfying,” Zhao shared. “I hope to continue my podium finishes at World Cup races and aim for even greater achievements at the 2026 Winter Olympics and beyond.”

A Promising Future for Team China

The men’s team also demonstrated their potential, with Yin Zheng securing bronze and three other racers finishing in the top eight. Yin, a standout athlete with three golds from the 2023-24 season, remains a strong contender for Milan-Cortina 2026.

The women’s squad performed exceptionally, with four racers qualifying for the event and Zhao’s historic win underscoring the team’s progress.

“We have the medals and strength in numbers,” Zhao remarked. “Our collective improvement is inspiring, and I look forward to even better results from both the men’s and women’s teams.”

A New Era for Chinese Skeleton Racing

With 62 athletes from 16 countries competing in Yanqing, Zhao’s victory and the team’s overall performance mark a significant milestone for China in skeleton racing. As they build momentum, the nation’s sledding squads are setting their sights on future glory.
