Hong Kong Bridges the AI Divide Between China and the World

Date:

Despite mounting geopolitical challenges, Hong Kong continues to play a vital role in bridging the gap between mainland China and the rest of the world in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. According to Lawrence Cheung Chi-chong, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) chief technology officer, the city remains a critical hub for international AI collaboration.

Speaking at an AI conference hosted by the HKPC, Cheung highlighted how Hong Kong’s unique position enables it to connect AI innovators globally. “Right now, we are seeing barriers being created between the US and mainland China, which risks stifling technological progress,” he remarked.

Cheung expressed concern over the limitations imposed on international partnerships, particularly with Western nations. “Sometimes, we’re uncertain about reaching out to Western counterparts, as they may be willing but unable to collaborate freely. This situation is unfortunate for technology development,” he added.

The HKPC has been championing the wider adoption of AI technologies across various industries in Hong Kong. The council aims to solidify Hong Kong’s status as a launching pad for international AI firms by fostering innovation and collaboration. In a world where geopolitical tensions threaten to slow down progress, Hong Kong stands as a beacon of connection and opportunity for the AI community.
