Samuel Eto’o’s Resignation Rejected Amid Deepening Corruption Crisis in Cameroon Football

Date:

Samuel Eto’o, the legendary Cameroonian footballer and four-time African Player of the Year, recently tendered his resignation as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT). However, his resignation was unanimously rejected by the federation’s executive committee during a meeting in Yaoundé on Monday.

Eto’o’s presidency has been overshadowed by allegations of match-fixing, corruption, and abuse of power. The controversy intensified following reports from The Athletic, which claimed to have access to emails, letters, WhatsApp messages, and audio recordings pointing to serious misconduct. A file detailing these accusations has reportedly been sent to FIFA’s ethics committee and is also under investigation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Despite these allegations, the executive committee expressed its full confidence in Eto’o, emphasizing his commitment to rebuilding and developing Cameroonian football as outlined in his 2021 plan. The federation released a statement affirming their decision to maintain the current leadership team.

Disappointing AFCON Campaign Adds to Pressure

Cameroon’s recent performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has added to the turmoil. The team narrowly advanced from the group stage after a late win against Gambia but fell to Nigeria in the round of 16. Questions have also been raised about the future of head coach Rigobert Song following the underwhelming campaign.

Eto’o’s leadership is further complicated by his ongoing ambassadorial role with a sports betting company, which some believe conflicts with his duties at FECAFOOT. This partnership has drawn criticism from at least one Cameroonian football club, alleging it violates the federation’s ethical guidelines.

A History of Football Scandals in Cameroon

Before Eto’o’s election, Cameroonian football faced numerous challenges, including government interference, corruption allegations, and unfulfilled promises from previous leaders. Eto’o’s appointment was seen as a new dawn for the sport in the nation, but the recent wave of controversies threatens to undermine his efforts.

CAF has called for patience, noting that Eto’o remains “presumed innocent until proven guilty by an appropriate judicial body.” As investigations continue, the future of Cameroonian football hangs in the balance, with many hoping for a resolution that prioritizes transparency and fairness.
