Brazilian-born football star Douglas Santos, currently playing for Zenit St. Petersburg FC in the Russian Premier League, has officially become a Russian citizen. This development paves the way for his inclusion in the Russian national football team, according to the team’s head coach Valery Karpin.
Santos received his Russian passport in late October following a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin. Coach Karpin hinted at Santos’s potential debut for the national team, stating, “Once his football documentation is finalized, we see no reason not to welcome him aboard.”
A Distinguished Career with Zenit St. Petersburg
Since joining Zenit St. Petersburg in July 2019, Santos has made an impressive mark. Playing as a left-back, he has scored seven goals and delivered 33 assists in 198 appearances. His contributions have helped the club secure five Russian championships, two Russian Cups, and one Russian Super Cup.
From Brazil to Russia
Santos, now 30, has had an illustrious international career as well. He represented Brazil at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, earning a silver medal. With his new Russian citizenship, Santos is likely to feature in Russia’s upcoming international friendlies this month.
