This ambitious $10 billion Standard Gauge Railway of Tanzania is finally taking shape as it tries to give a makeover to the economic landscape of the East African country with increased trade, creating employment coupled with marked economic growth. Operational this month in June 2024, the SGR is 2,500 kilometres long, linking Dar es Salaam and other significant Tanzanian cities such as Mwanza and Kigoma. It further connects regional states including Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the DRC. The Tanzania SGR will completely disrupt the way East Africa handles its trade and logistics.
Enhancing Tanzanian Economy by Increasing Connectivity
The ongoing SGR project is one strategic step toward the stimulation of economic development by reducing times and costs of transport. Kitila Mkumbo, the Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment in Tanzania, made the following presentation to the country’s Parliament recently: “The railway will provide a very good investment environment with the result of being good for business.”. This will serve domestic and international trade and strategically position Tanzania to assume the leading transport and logistics hub within East and Southern Africa.
Benefits of Standard Gauge Railway Tanzania Project
The impact brought forth by the SGR project is multi-factorial in offering numerous considerable benefits in trade, employment, and investment as below:
Smoothened trade and cross-border business: As the SGR connects Tanzania with its neighbours, it extends regional trade routes to facilitate quicker cross-border movement of goods. This connectivity aids transportation and develops better levels of economic cooperation within East Africa, thereby adding to the regional trade authority of Tanzania.
- Job Creation and Workforce Development: To date, the SGR has created more than 180,000 jobs, therefore benefitting the local communities through increased employment rates. An additional 115,566 jobs are expected to be created from the project, hence increasing more economic opportunities and skill development for Tanzanians.
- More Foreign Investment: Tanzania has received, since the year 2023 to date, a total of $4.59 billion in investments associated with the SGR project-a factor indicating increased attractiveness of the country to foreign investors. This shows how the SGR is creating a very conducive environment for investment.
- Development of Local Manufacturing: Due to the need for materials and supplies, the SGR project spurred local industries, hence boosting the manufacturing sector of Tanzania. Apart from increasing local production capacity in order to meet the needs that arose from railway construction, wider positive impacts have been realized on industrialization within the country.
- Efficient Transportation: SGR updates and streamlines the transport network for logistics solution support through speed and reliability. This speed, in turn, ensures good service delivery by companies and to the end user, hence making a more productive and competitive economy.
Role of SGR in Development Plan of Tanzania
According to Minister Mkumbo, SGR is supposed to be an integral part of the 2025/26 Development Plan in Tanzania as part of its strategy for logistical infrastructure development in a bid to become a key regional player in East African logistics. The railway’s design further meets the goals that Tanzania has set for itself in terms of long-term sustainable growth, factoring in the country’s unique geography in positioning itself to become a strategic transit point for trade across the region.

The SGR project speaks volumes of the commitment of Tanzania to a robust economy diversified, more than it being just a railway. This facilitates seamless border trades, creation of jobs, making state-of-the-art infrastructural improvements, setting the course towards a prosperous economic future, and regional leadership.
