BRICS 2024 Summit in Kazan: What to Expect as the Bloc Expands

Date:

The 16th BRICS Summit is taking place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, and it promises to be a landmark event for the international bloc.

This year’s summit will see the inclusion of five new members, signaling a significant expansion in BRICS’ global influence.

Expansion of Membership

This summit marks the first gathering with the newly admitted members—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—raising the total membership of BRICS from five to ten nations.

This expansion is expected to enhance the group’s geopolitical and economic influence, as the bloc now represents a more diverse range of countries.

Strong International Presence

Over 32 countries confirmed their attendance, with 24 heads of state expected to participate. All current BRICS members will be represented, with nine of them attending at the leadership level. Saudi Arabia, one of the newly admitted nations, will be represented by its foreign minister.

Summit Agenda

The summit is divided into two main parts, each with distinct themes. The first session, taking place on October 22-23, will focus on BRICS member nations under the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.”

The second session, scheduled for October 23-24, will adopt a “BRICS Plus/Outreach” format with a focus on “BRICS and the Global South: Jointly Building a Better World.”

Expanding BRICS Membership

With 34 countries expressing interest in joining BRICS or forming partnerships, discussions on potential new members will be a significant agenda item.

The interest from additional states highlights BRICS’ growing appeal as an alternative platform for global cooperation.

Bilateral Meetings

Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold more than 20 bilateral meetings during the summit, including talks with major global leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

These meetings are expected to address a range of regional and international issues, further strengthening bilateral ties.

Expected Outcomes

The summit is anticipated to conclude with a joint declaration by the participating nations, outlining common goals and shared visions for the future.

This declaration will likely touch on topics related to multilateralism, economic cooperation, and security, reinforcing BRICS’ commitment to global development and its role as a counterbalance to Western-led institutions.

As the world watches the 2024 BRICS Summit unfold, the decisions made in Kazan could shape the future of global geopolitics, reflecting the bloc’s ambitions to create a more inclusive and balanced international order.
