South African President Aims to Strengthen Ties with Russia at BRICS Summit, Says Presidential Spokesperson

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa plans to use the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, to reinforce relations with Moscow, according to presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

Speaking at a press briefing, Magwenya emphasized that Ramaphosa intends to engage in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on various matters of shared interest, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“Ramaphosa plans to address a range of issues of mutual interest, including the conflict in Ukraine,” said Magwenya.

Magwenya also highlighted South Africa’s interest in the expanded BRICS+ framework following the recent enlargement of the bloc, noting that the consolidation of BRICS+ is of particular significance to South Africa.

The BRICS summit is scheduled to take place in Kazan from October 22 to 24.

According to Russian officials, over 30 countries have confirmed their attendance, including Bahrain, the UAE, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.

Additionally, several international organizations, including the United Nations, will send representatives, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres among those expected to participate.
