Springbok And Vodacom Bulls Center Lionel Mapoe Retires From Rugby

Date:

Former Springboks and Vodacom Bulls centre, Lionel Mapoe has announced his retirement from rugby after nearly two decades playing rugby as a professional.

Mapoe began his journey with the Cheetahs in 2008 and had notable spells with both the Lions and Bulls.

“Winning the Currie Cup in 2021 was a special moment in my career, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing coaches, players, and staff I was fortunate to work alongside.”

In 2009, he represented the Blitzboks in six matches before being called up to the Springboks in 2015, narrowly missing out on selection for the World Cup squad that year.

“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the entire Bulls family for the incredible time I had during my years at the union,” Mapoe stated on social media.

“The relationships I built during my time there will stay with me for a lifetime. I’m deeply grateful for everything the Bulls have done for me, both on and off the field,” Mapoe added.

Between 2015 and 2018, Mapoe earned 14 Test caps for South Africa.
