Dubai Implements “City Brain” System that uses AI to Revolutionize Traffic Management

Date:

In Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has implemented effective precautionary measures and initiatives. These efforts have successfully restored the growth of public transport ridership to 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels. The RTA has recently embarked on a trial of the innovative “City Brain” system, that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to manage traffic.

The RTA’s proactive measures have not only boosted ridership but also yielded positive outcomes in various aspects. The number of kilometers traveled has decreased by 18 percent, showcasing the effectiveness of the implemented measures in reducing unnecessary travel. Furthermore, there has been a commendable six percent improvement in bus on-time arrival, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of public transport services. In a significant environmental achievement, carbon emissions have been reduced by an impressive 34 metric tonnes.

Harnessing the Power of Artificial Intelligence

The innovative “City Brain” system is cutting-edge technology, that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced algorithms to manage traffic in urban areas. By analyzing extensive data from various sources, including nol cards, buses, taxis, and the Enterprise Command and Control Centre, the system provides valuable insights for real-time notifications and improvements in bus schedules and routes. The anticipated impact is a 17 percent increase in bus ridership, a 10 percent reduction in average waiting time, and a five percent enhancement in journey time and average bus usage.

Monitoring Performance and Ensuring Efficiency

The RTA has collaborated with FAMCO to establish a remote Bus Performance Monitoring Centre at the Al Quoz Bus Depot. This state-of-the-art center allows instant tracking and monitoring of the performance efficiency of the RTA’s new fleet of 516 Volvo buses equipped with Telematics systems. The system provides real-time insights into various aspects of bus operations, including mechanical performance, fuel consumption per kilometer, and safety equipment condition. As a result, fuel consumption has been reduced by five percent, enabling cost savings and contributing to environmental sustainability. The monitoring center has also facilitated effective planning for regular maintenance, ensuring optimal bus performance and improved road safety standards. These initiatives have had a positive impact on customer satisfaction.

Recently, six new public bus stations have been opened at Al Ghubaiba, Al Jafiliya, Etisalat, Union, Oud Metha, and Al Satwa stations. They are expected to accommodate thousands of passengers daily, further enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of Dubai’s public transportation system.
