Tanzania Unveils New State House in Dodoma

Date:

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan unveiled the newly constructed State House in Chamwino, Dodoma, on Saturday, May 20. The completion of this project marks a significant milestone after a construction period of 30 months.

Late President John Magufuli initiated the construction of the State House in 2020 when he laid the foundation stone. This project is a testament to the visionary goals set forth by Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who selected the Chamwino location in the 1970s.

Relocating Government Offices: Dodoma’s Transformation

During Magufuli’s presidency, he emphasized the need to relocate government offices to Dodoma. This ambitious endeavor aimed to alleviate congestion in Dar es Salaam while propelling the economic development of Dodoma as the capital city. The impressive structure sits on a vast parcel of land, 200 times larger than the State House in Dar es Salaam.

Prominently displayed on the front porch of the State House are giant photographs showcasing the country’s presidents, starting from Nyerere and spanning all the way to President Suluhu.

The construction of this magnificent structure was led by the National Service wing of Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF). This collaborative effort highlights the government’s commitment to harnessing local skills and resources to achieve their vision.

Dodoma: The Capital of the United Republic of Tanzania

President Suluhu emphasized the significance of the completion of the government’s ambition to make Dodoma the capital of the United Republic of Tanzania. In the short term, government officials will still visit Dar es Salaam to receive international guests, but the long-term goal is to transform Dar es Salaam into a bustling business city.

The opening ceremony of the State House commenced at dawn as esteemed guests arrived from both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Notable attendees included retired presidents Ali Hassan Mwinyi and Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. President Suluhu, welcomed by Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango, planted a tree in front of the impressive Chamwino State House building.

The completion and inauguration of the new State House symbolize Tanzania’s progress, unity, and commitment to realizing the goals of its founding fathers.
