Paintings of Homelessness: Art Inspires Change

Date:

An art exhibition titled “Invisible Neighbors, Paintings of the Homeless by Daniel Miller” is being held at Studio Bob in Port Angeles. The exhibition features paintings by Miller of homeless people in the Las Vegas area. The purpose of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the increasing homeless population in America and to encourage people to take action to address the issue.

Increasing Homelessness in America

Daniel Miller, the artist behind the exhibition, moved to Port Angeles from Las Vegas four years ago. He created the “Invisible Neighbors” series of paintings with the aim of calling attention to the alarming surge of the homeless population in America. Miller believes this trend is happening in cities all across the country and cannot be ignored. He said, “Those of us who are more fortunate in our economic status find it all too easy to look away and pretend that we are not connected.”

Motivating Change Through Art

Miller hopes that his paintings will inspire people to take action and help the homeless population. He believes that ignoring is not a solution. In an interview, he said, “I want so much to bring some awareness to inspire some motivation to do something about it.” Miller’s connection to the homeless population started when he was driving to a gallery for an opening of his work in Las Vegas. He saw a homeless person playing chess with himself in the entry foyer of a vacant commercial building. He was moved by the realization that, in spite of having lost everything, this person was still an engaged and thinking human. He felt a connection and immediately envisioned the scene as a painting. This idea took hold, and he felt compelled to use his art to help increase focus on the issue.
