Kenya’s horticulture exports to rise 10 pct in 2023, reports

Date:

According to reports, Kenya’s horticulture exports are expected to rise by around 10% to 166.76 billion shillings (about 1.23 billion US dollars) in 2023, up from 1.1 billion dollars in 2022.

According to Ojepat, the majority of exports are transported by air freight, with the remainder transported by road and rail to the Port of Mombasa before being loaded onto shipping vessels en route to their various destinations, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, and the Middle East.

“Given the current good rains being experienced in most parts of the country and the increase in demand from the overseas market, we expect to grow the 2023 exports,” Okisegere Ojepat, chief executive officer of Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya, a trade association committed to driving the growth of fresh produce companies in Kenya, told journalists in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, during a horticulture workshop.

Flowers, fruits, and vegetables are among the principal horticulture crops grown in East Africa. According to government figures, horticulture exports are the country’s biggest source of foreign money, followed by tea, tourism, diaspora remittances, and coffee.
